A Life in Technology Leadership

Dr. Luis E. Taveras is Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Information Officer at Jefferson, an $18 billion health enterprise of 34 hospitals spanning care delivery, health insurance, and a university. He leads technology, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence.

Over more than four decades, he has led technology through some of the most complex challenges in business, government, and healthcare, in leadership roles at IBM, Accenture, and the City of Buffalo, New York. Recognized as one of the top 30 healthcare CIOs in the U.S., he led the technology integration of Jefferson and Lehigh Valley Health Network.

He came to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 1970, at twelve years old. A placement through A Better Chance took him to New Canaan High School in Connecticut. He went on to Wesleyan University, and then to a first career at IBM, where he learned to become the expert people call when something new arrives.

On September 11, 2001, he helped set up an emergency triage unit at Saint Vincent’s, the closest trauma center to Ground Zero.
